Cortex Piriformis

Strong signals were observed in the hyperpallium accessorium, nidopallium and nucleus basorostralis pallii, and moderate signals were found in the hippocampus, cortex piriformis, hyperpallium intercalatum, area temporo-parieto-occipitalis, nucleus striae terminalis lateralis, nucleus olfactorius anterior and organum septi lateralis at ED16.

Ir-fibers occurred in the habenular area, hyperstriatum, hippocampus, parahippocampal area, cortex piriformis, and n.

High levels of hybridization were detected in the cortex piriformis, ectostriatum, hippocampus, cerebellum and in a range of discrete nuclei throughout the brain, including the ovoidalis, isthmo-opticus and spiriformis lateralis nuclei.

A less dense signal is also present in the medial preoptic area, the nucleus accumbens, several hypothalamic nuclei (e.g., paraventricular and ventromedial nuclei), all divisions of the amygdala, and several regions of the cortex, especially the cortex piriformis.

Distinct populations of labeled cells were also detected in the hyperstriatum accessorium, hippocampus, area parahippocampalis, nucleus of the diagonal band, cortex dorsolateralis, and cortex piriformis.

Target neurons were present in ventral periventricular brain regions including tuberculum olfactorium, nucleus accumbens, cortex piriformis, primordium hippocampi, nucleus striae terminalis, dorsal ventricular ridge, amygdala, nucleus infundibularis and tectum opticum.

ir-cGnRH II fibers were prominent in limbic structures (cortex piriformis, lateral to nucleus taeniae, hippocampus); olfactory areas (tuberculum olfactorium, nucleus subhabenularis lateralis, nucleus septalis lateralis); areas that in other avian species have steroid-concentrating cells or receptors (medial edge of lobus parolfactorius, nucleus septalis medialis, nucleus periventricularis magnocellularis, nucleus dorsomedialis posterior thalami); and areas containing ir-GnRH I cells or fibers but not in median eminence.

Reduction of Bmax for [ 3H]PAC binding was observed also in the nucleus periventricularis hypothalami, an area involved in the inhibitory control of GH secretion and, among extrahypothalamic areas, only in the cortex piriformis.

High concentrations of [ 3H]prazosin binding sites were detected in the archistriatum/pars ventralis, the hippocampus, the cortex piriformis, the area corticoidea dorsolateralis, the dorsal thalamus, and the nucleus praetectalis.

Intermediate binding (0.5-1.0 pmol/mg of protein) was found in the septum pellucidum, columna fornicis, corpus mamillare, cortex piriformis, gyrus cinguli, striatum, substantia grisea centralis, substantia nigra, and cerebellum.

Medium to low density was seen, amongst other areas in the cortex piriformis, the hippocampus, the medial and intralaminar thalamus and the tractus spino-thalamicus.

(2) Laterally coursing fibers project to area corticoidea dorsolateralis, area temporo-parieto-occipitalis, cortex piriformis, and the posterior part of archistriatum.

No projections were detected in the striatum, the cortex piriformis or the amygdala.
